IN ORDINARY TIME + AUGUST 28, 2011
From the Pastor... The next change I want to discuss will be with what it called the "Confiteor" (which begins, I confess to almighty God...), the new translation better reflects the Latin text of the Mass and help us cultivate a more humble, sorrowful attitude toward God as we confess our sins. Instead of simply saying that I have sinned "though my own fault," as we have in the present translation, we will now repeat it three time while striking our breasts in a sign of repentance, saying, "Through my fault, through my fault, though my most grievous fault."
This repetition more fully expresses our sorrow over sin. When we are at fault over something small, we might simply say to the person whom we have wronged, "I am sorry." But if it is a more serious matter and we deeply feel sorrow over our actions, we sometimes apologize several times and in varying ways: "I'm so sorry...I really regret doing that...Please forgive me." This prayer in the liturgy help us recognize that sinning against God is not light matter. We must take responsibility for whatever wrong we have done and whatever good we failed to do. At Mass, one does not simply offer an apology to God. The revised translation of this prayer helps the Christian express more heartfelt contrition and humbly admit that one has sinned, "through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault."
With this new translation to the Confiteor it will help to make all of us, myself included, more aware of the importance of heeding the words of St. Paul to the Thessalonians, "It is God's will that you are holy." And holiness begins by admitting ones sorrow for the wrong we have done toward the infinite love of our heavenly Father.
.
Blessings,
Fr. Michael

Grades K-3: The children in grades K–3 attend classes during the weekend liturgies. We use a Lectionary Catechesis, which is based on the Gospel of the week. Kindergarten students are not obliged to attend regularly. However beginning with grade 1, students must attend classes on a weekly basis during the Mass, as the program for First Communion is a two-year program. Classes are held at each weekend Mass. We would need some volunteers to help out as hall monitors during the classes. Please contact the office if you can do this.
Generations of Faith: This program is designed for both parents and children. Parents who have children in grades 4–10 are asked to attend these 7 monthly sessions. The adult session gives an opportunity to refresh your memory on important matters of the faith, as well as giving you the chance to share with other adults on pertinent issues of faith. All GOF sessions will be held 7 times during the year on one Sunday afternoon each month, from 4:00-5:30 pm (note change in time).
CHRISTIAN FORMATION TEACHERS NEEDED: If you would be interested in helping with our weekly dismissals of K-3 during Mass, or at our once-a-month Generations of Faith Sessions, please call Jake at 669-5134, or e-mail to stpetercf@comcast.net , and Jake will be in touch with you.
R.C.I.A. - RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: Do you feel something missing in your life? Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic faith? People are drawn to explore the Catholic faith for many different reasons. Perhaps they experienced a Catholic Mass at the time of a wedding or funeral and were attracted by the prayer and ritual. They may have witnessed the source of hope and comfort a Catholic relative, friend or co-worker found in their faith at a time of difficulty or crisis. Any one of these experiences—or a thousand more like them—might have started you thinking about what it would be like to be a Catholic. How do you find out? Where do you start? REFLECTION OF THE WEEK
First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9
Second Reading: Romans 12:1-2
Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks about the necessity for Him to suffer and die. This is one of the many predictions about the passion that Jesus made about His ministry. Peter’s response to this proclamation is abhorrence. Peter wanted Jesus to be a Messiah who was a conquering hero. He wanted Jesus to be a kin so that he could share in Jesus’ glory. He told Jesus “God forbid”. Jesus responded to this protest with the rebuke “Get behind me, Satan!” While Peter’s profession that Jesus was the Christ, the son of the living God, was from God, this sentiment was not. It was from Satan. Peter did not understand that Jesus would be king upon the cross and that would be His hour of glory Although he did not yet know it, Peter would share in this glory by the manner of his own death.
