SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

FEBRUARY 28, 2010

On the Way....Lent is a Penitential Season. We have public penance, specifically expressed in the universal regulations on fast and abstinence. We are also asked to engage in private penance, sacrificial offerings, extra time in prayer, etc. It is also a penitential season in that we are encouraged to present ourselves to the Sacrament of Penance with individual confession. The precept of the church states that we go to this Sacrament at least once per year. Even though we are not obliged to do so at a specific time of the year, the Lenten Season is so appropriate. On March 8, 15, 22, and 29, Monday evenings, Father Babineau and I will be available in church at 6:30 pm for individual confessions. If you desire to present yourselves outside of these times, you are free to contact me or another priest to set up a private time and appointment.

REMINDER: Lenten weekly Mass schedule is Monday and Wednesday at 7:00 am and Tuesday at 12:00 noon. There is a Mass on First Friday, March 5, at 7:00 am.

PARISH NURSE: NO Parish Nurse this Friday, March 5. Kathy returns March 12 from 7:30-10:00 am.

WEEKLY OFFERTORY: $5,812

SACRIFICIAL GIVING: Peter, James and John wanted to build a "booth" for Jesus and just stay on the mountain where His transfiguration took place. But the Son of God, the Chosen One, knew that He must instead keep moving toward His Crucifixion. We, too, must rise from worship and do what we can to hasten the coming of the Kingdom.

PLEASE NOTE: Shirley Delacoe, the Administrative Assistant of the parish, will be on vacation from March 6-March 21. If you are in need of assistance, please call Fr. Dumont (Voice Mail #1), or leave a message on Shirley’s Voice Mail (#2) and Mary Stevens of the Christian Formation Office will return your call.

FOOD DRIVE: Next weekend our Food Drive is for the Sonshine Soup Kitchen in Derry. Items most needed are instant sugar-free jello and pudding, hot chocolate packets, sturdy 9" paper or foam dinner plates, disposable latex gloves, sugar-free drink mix (crystal light), gift cards to local supermarkets.

FROM RESPECT LIFE

Christians are indistinguishable from other men either by nationality, language or customs…And yet there is something extraordinary about their lives. They live in their own countries as though they were only passing through.…Like others, they marry and have children, but they do not expose them [to die]. They share their meals, but not their wives. They live in the flesh, but they are not governed by the desires of the flesh. They pass their days upon earth, but they are citizens of heaven. Obedient to the laws, they yet live on a level that transcends the law. Christians love all men, but all men persecute them. … They live in poverty, but enrich many; they are totally destitute, but possess an abundance of everything. They suffer dishonor, but that is their glory. They are defamed, but vindicated. A blessing is their answer to abuse; deference their response to insult. For the good they do they receive the punishment of malefactors, but even then they, rejoice, as though receiving the gift of life.

REFLECTION OF THE WEEK

First Reading: Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18

Second Reading: Philippians 3:17--4:1

Gospel: Luke 9:28b-36

The Account of the Transfiguration opens in a typical manner for the Gospel of Luke: Jesus went up to the mountain to pray. Jesus prays in this Gospel so that he might discern and obey the will of the Father.

Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus to show that is the fulfillment of the law (represented by Elijah).

Furthermore, both of them were associated with the coming of the Messiah, for Moses prayed for someone who would be greater then himself, and Elijah was to appear to prepare to the chosen people for the Day of the Lord. The disciples are confused. As often happens when we come into contact with the Holy, they could not fully understand the meaning of it all. God the Father proclaims Jesus as his chosen Son. This is something also heard at the Baptism, and even under the cross when Jesus is proclaimed to be the Son of God.
