FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

FEBRUARY 21, 2010

On the Way....We have received a directive from the diocesan offices that the practice of receiving the Precious Blood will resume at all Masses on Palm Sunday this year, March 28.

There are a few Lenten practices that the Church asks us to take very seriously: abstinence from meat on all Fridays of Lent as well as fasting on Good Friday. We are also encouraged to make extra efforts in deepening our prayer life, as well as controlling our impulses, speech, judgments, etc. When will you pray? What will you try to control?

REMINDER: Lenten weekly Mass schedule is Monday and Wednesday at 7:00 am and Tuesday at 12:00 noon.

PARISH NURSE: Parish Nurse this Friday. from 7:30-10:00 am.

WEEKLY OFFERTORY: $6,090.

SACRIFICIAL GIVING: Today’s first reading describes the offering of first fruits the people of Israel were to present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt and the gift of the promised land. Is my offering at today’s Mass an appropriate response to the many blessings the Lord has given me?

RICE BOWLS: Rice Bowls and accompanying leaflet are available in the pews this weekend. At the end of Lent, we would ask that you submit a check for the amount in your Rice Bowl, made payable to St. Peter Church, and place it in a plain envelope marked "Rice Bowl", along with your name and envelope number, and this donation will be added to your contribution records.

EASTER FLOWERS: If you would like to donate toward our Easter flowers in memory of a loved one, please put your donation ($10 suggested) in a separate envelope, with the person’s name, and "from". Names will be published in the Easter bulletin. (PLEASE PRINT!)

RETROUVAILLE: Rediscover a loving marriage with a Retrouvaille weekend. To register for the weekend or for more information, visit www.HelpOurMarriage.com  or call 1-800-470-2230.

REFLECTION OF THE WEEK

First Reading: Deuteronomy 26:4-10

Second Reading: Romans 10:8-13

Gospel: Luke 4:1-13

The temptation in the desert marks a moment when Jesus can purify the intentions for His public ministry. He is not going out into the world to gain fame or power. He is preaching and healing in order to obey the will of the Father. There are three versions of the temptation in the desert (one in each of the Synoptic Gospels). Mark is the simplest. He does not even give the three separate temptations. Matthew and Luke are similar, except they reverse the order of the last two temptations (possibly because mountains are more important in Matthew an Jerusalem was important in Luke). The temptations ask Jesus to misuse the power he has been given by the Father. Satan tells Him to think of Himself and to seek His own comfort. He tells Jesus to put the Father’s love to the test (trying to place a kernel of doubt in Jesus’ heart). In all of this, Satan tries to show himself reasonable. But Jesus is not using the logic of this world. He has placed himself entirely in the Father’s hands. It is important to remember that Satan’s temptations often sound reasonable and even logical. They tell us that we are being fools for not thinking of ourselves, that we deserve what we have, that God is at our beck and call. Jesus reminds us that God’s logic goes beyond earthly logic and calls us to sacrifice and radical trust in God.
