TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME + OCTOBER 4, 2009

On the Way....This weekend, we celebrate Respect Life Sunday. The Catholic Church continues to provide exceptionally strong leadership in working tirelessly to protect innocent human life and to restore legal protection to the unborn child. Tragically, over fifty million children have died since the Supreme Court handed down the infamous Roe v. Wade decision. Let us join together to do all in our power to restore a culture of life in our great nation. We have provided Respect Life pamphets in the pews this weekend. Please take one home.

Also on the Way...It was in early September of 1984 that Fr. Ed Knott, pastor of St. Peter Church, hired Mrs. Shirley Delacoe to work at preparing the weekly parish bulletin. Over these past 25 years Shirley has also taken on the tasks of bookkeeper, office manager, administrative assistant, part-time janitor, cook, laundress, receptionist, consultant, advisor, religious education teacher, human resource contact, Finance Council staff, Mass intention coordinator, payroll clerk, sacramental records overseer, scheduler for liturgical ministries, parish census-taker, clerk-of-the-works on many projects, State of NH Inspections overseer (boiler, underground fuel tank, elevator, fire extinguishers), and frequent advisor to the Diocese of Manchester on parish affairs, etc. In light of this quarter century of service the Pastoral Council felt "something" should be done. The Finance Council was also involved. One of the major obstacles was to keep this "secret" up until such time as the correct gift could be determined, and the date of presentation could be made. It is not easy to "keep a secret" from Shirley who is on top of everything that goes on in this parish (almost!). But we succeeded in surprising her with the surreptitious assistance of her husband Jim. The presentation took place before the end of the 11:00 am Mass last Sunday. Congratulations, Shirley, on your Silver Anniversary of employment and ministry at St. Peter.

THE FLU SEASON AND THE CELEBRATION OF MASS

The 2009-10 flu season is upon us, and the Catholic Church in New Hampshire, like many other organizations, is preparing for an influenza outbreak. At the recommendation of the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bishop McCormack has instituted the following precautions that will remain in effect through cold and flu season:

Attendance at Mass: If you are ill, please stay at home and refrain from attendance at Church celebrations until you are fully recovered.

Sign of Peace/Greetings: The Sign of Peace should be shared without touching hands or kissing. This can be done with meaningful eye contact, smiles, and a bow of the head in reverence to one another.

Reception of Holy Communion: Parishioners should receive Holy Communion in their hands, and not on their tongue. Parishioners who receive Holy Communion on the tongue by necessity (i.e., because of a disability) should receive at the end of Communion.

The Precious Blood: Communion is only to be given in the species of the consecrated bread. If you are unable to receive Holy Communion in the species of the consecrated bread (Celiac Disease), please see the pastor. Once the flu season is over, we will quickly re-institute our traditional means of sharing the sign of peace and norm of distributing communion from the cup at each Sunday celebration of the Eucharist within the Diocese of Manchester. Additional information and prevention tips can be found on the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services website: www.dhhs.state.nh.us  and the Centers for Disease Control website at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/stopgerms.htm .

REFLECTION OF THE WEEK

First Reading: Genesis 2:18-24

Second Reading: Hebrews 2:9-11

Gospel: Mark 10:2-16

While Jesus clearly condemned divorce, He also called upon us to love the broken. It is a great pastoral challenge to be faithful to both of these values.
