SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME + JULY 26, 2009
On the Way......
Many of you have inquired about my vacation. Thank you for your concern. It was a wet one indeed. The rain did not permit me to work outside, it forced me to keep my nose between the covers of several books and my ears tuned in to music. I took that as a gift from God. I had two cousins who visited from Quebec for 5 days. I was able to visit with my godfather and his family. I also saw all of my brothers and sisters and their spouses and some of my nephews and nieces. It was a very restful vacation.
Let me bring to your attention that Kathryn Rogers, a member of our Liturgy Committee, has accepted the responsibility to schedule lectors, Eucharistic ministers and altar servers. Shirley Delacoe has been very efficient in taking care of this over the years. Kathryn is also in charge of the parish website and administers it in such a way that much information is available to you. Thank you to Shirley and Kathryn for their time and expertise. Thank you to all who serve in these liturgical ministries.
WEEKLY OFFERTORY: $4,854
PARISH TO PARISH: $836
SACRIFICIAL GIVING: "The hand of the Lord feeds us," says the Psalmist, "He answers all our needs." Both Elisha’s servant in the first reading and the disciples in the Gospel story who witnessed the feeding of the five thousand saw this happen and knew it to be true.
PLEASE NOTE: Bishop McCormack has lifted liturgical restrictions surrounding the H1N1 virus. Parishes may resume the practice of distributing Communion from the Cup to the faithful. In addition to that, people who choose to do so may continue the practice of receiving Communion on the tongue. The sign of peace through the shaking of hands, etc. may also be resumed. People who cough, sneeze or have a fever are still encouraged to refrain from physically sharing the sign of peace and from receiving Communion from the Cup. If the threat does not resume, Eucharistic Ministers of the Cup will be assigned beginning with the September schedule
MONTHLY FOOD DRIVE: The shelves at the N.H. Food Bank remain nearly empty. Donations are always down in the summer, but the demand continues to be high. Items needed most are canned tomatoes and sauces, pasta, canned meats, soups and vegetables and personal items such as deodorant, shampoo and bar soap. Thank you for anything that you can contribute.
PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS parishioner Vivian Morey, who died last week. Vivian and her husband Ernest (Buzz) faithfully worshipped at the 4:00 pm Saturday Mass. Our sympathies to Buzz and family on their loss.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Our Parish Nurse is returning on Friday, August 21, from 7:30-10:00 am. Welcome back, Kathy!

RESPECT LIFE: "The twentieth century often tried to do without that cornerstone, and attempted to build the city of man without reference to Him. It ended by actually building that city against man! Christians know that it is not possible to reject or ignore God without demeaning man. Allow me, dear young people, to consign this hope of mine to you: you must be those ‘builders’! You are the men and women of tomorrow. The future is in your hearts and in your hands. God is entrusting to you the task, at once difficult and uplifting, of working with him in the building of the civilization of love."
~Pope John Paul II

RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
The Rite of Christian Initiation takes place yearly at the Easter Vigil - Holy Saturday. This is the time when adults who have never been baptized in the Christian faith are baptized. It is also the time when baptized Christians of other Christian denominations are welcomed into the Catholic Church as they make a public profession of faith. This rite is also offered to baptized Catholics who were not fully initiated into the Church (never made their First Communion or Confirmation). As a general rule, this rite is not for adults who have received their First Communion, but never been confirmed. If Confirmation is the only sacrament they have not received, there will be a special course given for them during the year and an adult Confirmation will be held at the Cathedral in the Spring. If you or someone you know is a candidate for the Rite of Initiation or if someone is interested in finding out more about what is entailed in the preparation or for adult confirmation, please call Jake Linxweiler at 483-5571. The program will begin in the Fall.

REFLECTION OF THE WEEK
First Reading: 2 Kings 4:42-44
Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6
Gospel: John 6:1-15
The multiplication of loaves and fish has sometimes been described as being a social miracle; that Jesus shared all the food that he had and people were impressed by his generosity and they shared all the food that they had. This is a beautiful story, but it is not what is found in this Gospel account.
This is a nature miracle-one in which Jesus changes the rules of nature. This idea is reinforced by the fact that Jesus goes out for a walk on the Sea of Galilee in the next passage of the Gospel and he then calms as storm-both of which are also nature miracles. Miracles can and do happen, both in Jesus' day and our own.
