TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME + SEPTEMBER 28, 2008

On the Way....

While on retreat two weeks ago with other priests of our diocese I overheard one of them saying that there were unused Mass vestments in his parish. I spoke to him and he invited me to take the vestments if I was interested and they fit. So last week I went to St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Alton where Fr. Robert Cole had set aside 13 chasubles and matching stoles. Fr. Cole and Fr. Richard Wegman, a retired priest of our diocese, no longer needed these vestments, many of which had belonged to Fr. George Ham, who died this past year. So St. Peter and St. Paul Parishes have inherited 4 sets of green vestments, 2 each of red and violet and 5 white chasubles and stoles. Half of the sets come from sought-after clerical tailors and are very expensive and will therefore last for many decades. I have thanked on your behalf Father Cole and Father Wegman and I ask you to remember Father Ham in your prayers, as I often do.

Also On the Way.... I want to remind all 9th and 10th graders that we will have our first Confirmation class of the year after the 11 am Mass next Sunday, October 5. All students are expected to attend these sessions as well as the Generations of Faith sessions which begin October 19. For more details see the Christian Formation notices or call the Christian Formation Office at 669-5134. You can also access much of the information at the parish website www.stpeteraub.org

PARISH NURSE: Friday from 7:30-10:00 am.

Weekly Offertory: $5,185

This weekend is the first annual collection for Retired Priests of our Diocese. We hope you will help support our retired priests, who served parishes so well over the years. Thank you for your generosity. There are also envelopes on the table at the entryway for those of you who would like to make a donation at a later time.

MY SACRIFICIAL GIVING: The first son in today’s Gospel said he would do his father’s bidding, but did not. The second son balked at first, but then repented and did as he was asked. What service is God calling me to do? Which son am I more like?

FOOD DRIVE: Next weekend, Oct. 4/5, our Food Drive is for New Horizons Food Pantry. Items most needed this month are tuna, cereal, peanut butter, baked beans, #10 can vegetables, soup.

LITURGY COMMITTEE MEETING: Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 pm, Rectory Conference Room. The Committee picture will be taken for the Parish Directory.

We look forward to working with fellow Christians again to improve people's lives and show them the love of Jesus.

RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults: The Rite of Christian Initiation takes place yearly at the Easter Vigil - Holy Saturday. This is the time when adults who have never been baptized in the Christian faith are baptized. It is also the time when baptized Christians of other Christian denominations are welcomed into the Catholic Church as they make a public profession of faith. This rite is also offered to baptized Catholics who were not fully initiated into the Church (never made their First Communion or Confirmation). As a general rule, this rite is not for adults who have received their First Communion, but never been confirmed. If Confirmation is the only sacrament they have not received, there will be a special course given for them during the year and an adult Confirmation will be held at the Cathedral in Manchester both this Fall and next Spring. If you or someone you know is a candidate for the Rite of Initiation or if someone is interested in finding out more about what is entailed in the preparation or for adult confirmation, please call Jake Linxweiler at 483-5571.

FROM RESPECT LIFE: As assisted suicide laws continue to be proposed, it is well to remember that "there is no more dangerous public policy than transforming killing into a legal, and eventually a legitimate, medical treatment. In society today, we have decided that which is moral and good is that which is legal. And once you legalize assisted suicide, it will then be deemed good and moral." (Euthanasia expert Wesley J. Smith, Southern Cross 5/12/05)

REFLECTIONS OF THE WEEK

First Reading: Ezekiel 18:25-28

Second Reading: Philippians 2:1-11

Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32

Today we hear a parable concerning those who do the will of God and those who do not. Jesus speaks of a man with two sons. Their father tells them to go out to the vineyard. One says that he will go, but does not. The other says that he will not go, but does. Jesus asks his listeners which son did the father's will.

His listeners answer: the son who said no but then did it. Jesus tells them that this is an example of what will happen at the Last Judgment. Religious people say they will do the Father's will, but they do not. Prostitutes and tax collectors say they will not do God's will, but then they end up doing it. They will enter the kingdom of heaven before the so-called religious people.

Jesus often warned people who are religious that they should be careful, for their judgment would be more severe than that of great sinners. They have received a gift from the Lord in being able to practice their religion. From those to whom much has been given, much will be expected.

40 Days for Life in New Hampshire!!!! September 24- November 2, 2008

Can you join the nation in prayer, fasting and peaceful witness for 40 days to end abortion? Can you pray for life each day? Can you give up TV or dessert and offer the sacrifice for the unborn? Can you pray at the Planned Parenthood clinic in Manchester at 24 Pennacook St? We NEED you! Your prayers could save a life! In Buffalo, NY last year, 300 people prayed at the abortion clinic. During the 40 days, 30 lives were saved! www.40daysforlife.com Contact Julie at jlaugh@aspi.net  or Jeanne at 472-3003 Be not afraid!

PLEASE NOTE: Our Mass attendance continues to increase! In order to accommodate our growing flock, please be courteous, and slide to the center of the pew. Many people seem to prefer the "aisle" seats, but this leaves many seats in the center not being used, or difficult to get to. Please consider either moving to the center of the pew, or if for some reason, you need to sit on the end seat, please make it easier for people to get to the available seats. Thank you.
