TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME + AUGUST 31, 2008

On the Way....

This week marks the beginning of my 6th year as pastor at St. Peter, Auburn. I was mentioning to members of the staff just last week that I was quite happy here, just fine and dandy. I truly do not know how to thank the staff for they make my task mighty easy; they relieve me from many administrative tasks that free me up for pastoral "priestly" duties. Obviously the same compliments extend to Miss Lorette Nault, Pastoral Associate at St. Paul Parish and the staff there. In conversations with my brother priests, I have come to realize that I do not share in many of the difficulties they have in their parishes. . In both parishes, I deem, we have most thoughtful and very competent Pastoral and Finance Councils. I love to pray with you in our respective churches. Keep me in your prayers as I do you in mine every single day!

RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults: The Rite of Christian Initiation takes place yearly at the Easter Vigil - Holy Saturday. This is the time when adults who have never been baptized in the Christian faith are baptized. It is also the time when baptized Christians of other Christian denominations are welcomed into the Catholic Church as they make a public profession of faith. This rite is also offered to baptized Catholics who were not fully initiated into the Church (never made their First Communion or Confirmation). As a general rule, this rite is not for adults who have received their First Communion, but never been confirmed. If Confirmation is the only sacrament they have not received, there will be a special course given for them during the year and an adult Confirmation will be held at the Cathedral in Manchester both this Fall and next Spring. If you or someone you know is a candidate for the Rite of Initiation or if someone is interested in finding out more about what is entailed in the preparation or for adult confirmation, please call Jake Linxweiler at 483-5571. The program will begin in the Fall.

REFLECTIONS OF THE WEEK

First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9

Second Reading: Romans 12:1-2

Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27

In the passage that immediately precedes today’s Gospel, Saint Peter is given the keys of the kingdom and is proclaimed as the rock upon which the Church would be built. Today’s Gospel has almost the exactly opposite sentiment. Jesus speaks about the necessity for Him to suffer and die. This is one of the many predictions about the passion that Jesus made during his ministry. Peter’s response to this proclamation is abhorrence. Peter wanted Jesus to be a Messiah who was a conquering hero. He wanted Jesus to be a king so that he could share in Jesus’ glory. He told Jesus "God forbid". Jesus responded to this protest with the rebuke "Get behind Me, Satan!" While Peter’s profession that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God, was from God, - this sentiment was not. It was from Satan. Peter did not understand that Jesus would be king upon the cross and that would be His hour of glory. Although he did not yet know it, Peter would share in this glory by the manner of his own death.

TITHE: We’d like to share with you some of the comments of the recipients of our monthly tithe.

New Horizons Soup Kitchen: "As the economy struggles, our clients are faced with the harsh realities of rising gas and food costs. Most are finding it difficult to make ends meet, while also providing food for their families. In the month of June, we saw a 16% increase in the total number of children being served here. A young family utilizing the Pantry told our Pantry Manager ‘We don’t know how we would feed the kids without the help of New Horizons’ ".

Sonshine Soup Kitchen in Derry: "I want to thank you for sharing what God has blessed you with. Your generous donation of $500 will help us to ensure His blessings will be passed on to those in need."

The Missionary Servants of Pope John Paul I: "We thank you so much for your recent incredible gift of $300, which will be so helpful in the shipping of our supplies to the Sisters in Haiti. God is so good. Our shipping went up $500 for each container, due to high gas prices, and your gift is so appreciated."

Webster House : "Your support is gratefully acknowledged and your contribution to the work of helping the young people here is deeply appreciated. Every cloud has a silver lining. Thanks for being that for us."
