FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME + JULY 13, 2008

On the Way....

The 49th International Eucharistic Congress opened in Quebec City on Sunday, June 15. The opening ceremonies and Celebration of the Eucharist took place that afternoon. The "Eucharistic City" comprised the grounds and buildings of Quebec's "Expo-Cite", a large arena and an array of buildings on several acres in the northern section of the capital. Since I was staying with my cousin in Beauport, a suburb, I had free access to the city's metropolitan bus service. Cardinal Josef Tomko was the Papal Legate to the Congress and presided at the opening ceremonies with Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Quebec. The Congress' theme and logo were presented: Samuel de Champlain sailed into the City in 1608 on the ship "Don de Dieu" (Gift of God), which is also the symbol of the City of Quebec. The Eucharist: Gift of God for the life of the world. Pilgrims from around the world were reminded of the Catholic origins of Quebec, the blood of the North American Martyrs, the faith and good works of women religious, and the foundation of the first diocese in North America under the loving watch of its first bishop, Blessed Francois de Laval, whose diocese took in all of present day Canada and the United States, except the 13 Colonies of Great Britain and Spanish Florida, Texas and California. RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults takes place yearly at the Easter Vigil - Holy Saturday. This is the time when adults who have never been baptized in the Christian faith are baptized. It is also the time when baptized Christians of other Christian denominations are welcomed into the Catholic Church as they make a public profession of faith. This rite is also offered to baptized Catholics who were not fully initiated into the Church (never made their First Communion or Confirmation). As a general rule, this rite is not for adults who have received their First Communion, but never been confirmed. If Confirmation is the only sacrament they have not received, there will be a special course given for them during the year and an adult Confirmation will be held at the Cathedral in the Spring. If you or someone you know is a candidate for the Rite of Initiation or if someone is interested in finding out more about what is entailed in the preparation or for adult confirmation, please call Jake Linxweiler at 483-5571. The program will begin in the Fall.

REFLECTION OF THE WEEK

First Reading: Isaiah 55:10-11

Second Reading: Romans 8:18-23

Gospel: Matthew 13:1-23

What does it mean to love God?

There are people in our lives who are at the edge of our worlds. They are called acquaintances. If we see them at the mall, we wave at them. If we do them a favor, we feel that they owe us. If we talk to them for a while and it drags on, we will tell them we are sorry but we have something important to do.

There are other people whom we call friends. If we see them at the mall, we go over to them. If we do them a favor, the joy was in doing the favor. And if we are speaking with them, we sometimes lose track of time because it is such a good thing to be with them.

Then there are people we love. When we wake up in the morning we are thinking of them. When we go to bed , we are still thinking of them. Everything we see, in fact, reminds us of the beloved.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

What kind of soil am I?

Individual, couples, parents and children and even groups can take today's gospel and reflect on it after re-reading it slowly. Each one of us is at times a different type of soil. So it is probably best not to cast ourselves or someone else into a single category, but see how each type of soil represents a different reaction in my life...rocky, thorny and rich soil. Since I have ears, I can hear the word and receive it with joy, but it only lasts for a time; a little tribulation and it immediately falls away. I can hear the work but become lured with riches and attractions and distractions and bear no fruit. Then I can hear the word and understand it, and that will bear fruit and bring me and those around me happiness.
